whine noise 2006 Torrent

Thanks for taking the time to read my question.

I have a 2006 Torrent. We purchased it used. We tested a few Torrents and they all sort of made the same noise

It is sort of a whine noise that changes pitch with acceleration. Easy to hear if in park. Gets louder when in gear. Don't have to be moving to create the noise.

The sound reminds me a bit of The sound K.I.T. Used to make on Knight Rider. Dating myself here but hopefully it helps.

During my searches I found that Torrents use electronic power steering so it can't be the power steering pump.

Could it be a water pump?

The sales people we spoke to when test driving the torrents (several dealerships) all said that it's a normal noise for Torrents. I assumed they were telling us the truth. The noise isn't getting worse but it is starting to make me wonder...

I was told that Torrents just have a loud transmission.

Our neighbour's have a Torrent but theirs is not noisy, hence my curiosity.

Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to determine where the sound is coming from and if it's bad or not.

Did you check the transmission fluid level? Did you have the vehicle checked by an independant mechanic after you purchased it?
 
What do mean thoughts? Your link explains how the fluid has to be checked.

Yes the link is correct, the vehicle has to be either on a lift, or you can try pulling the drivers side wheel, placing a jack under the car for support after leveling the car, and removing the plug to check the level.
 
Put in a used AC compressor which solved the noise issue.
