My 99 Sunfire recently began making a whining noise when I start driving. It sounds fine at idle, then I shift into drive and put my foot on the accelerator and I start hearing it. The noise stops at about 50 MPH. It is also making a loud screeching sound when I first start it in cold weather. That goes away as the car warms up.

I am thinking the first issue is a transmission problem...it shifts fine and doesn't slip or anything. I haven't seen any leaks. So any ideas what would cause this noise? The fluid was recently flushed.
Thanks!

When you had the transmission flushed, did they drop the pan and change the filter. If not it is was a waste of time and money and may have stirred up debris on the bottom of the pan leading to issues with the transmission. Have you checked if the drive belt is loose?

I believe they billed my for a filter but I would have to check out the invoice again. The drive belt was changed at the same time. I took it in because it was making a screeching noise upon starting. That stopped for a while after the belt was changed but now it is doing it again when it is cold. My friend did look at it the other night and said the drive belt was not loose.

What would cause the whining noise? I don't know how much $$ I should put into a car this old.

It could be the belt tensioner or one one of the other accessory bearings.

Same problem as my old Elantra. Never took care of it cause the car got totaled, but the problem was the tensioner being loose.
