Hello all,

My 2002 sunfire 2.2 recently started making a strange noise, it is a similar noise to a wheel bearing gone but I'm pretty sure it's not.

It seems to come at 2000 rpm and above like a wurring noise, it's almost like a gearbox low on oil but that also seems ok.

I can't really reel if it's coming from the gearbox or engine any one have any ideas on what it could be. I also think it gets slightly louder as the car heats up.

Sometimes rare it is accompanied with a slight knock at below 1500 rpm like when taking off.

Any help appreciated thanks
Killian

do you hear the noise in neutral or park when standing still?
when you are moving at 1,500 RPM and place the trani in neutral what happens to the noise?

When idling in neutral it is very slight to non existent.. When I'm moving and slip into neutral it dies down and becomes less noticeable until idle and practically goes again. It's a manual. By the way too.

If I sit in neutral and Rev up and down to 2000 rpm you can here it come and go. I would upload a video but I don't think it would pick up the noise

Just noticed there too that it is there when idling now too

I also think I have isolated it to the passenger side would it be a pulley/tensioner or water pump possibly?

Could be any of those. Get a stethascope or a chunk of hose and try and pinpoint the noise.

Had another look over this the other day as I still haven't solved it. I noticed the power steering fluid was pretty dirty could this be the p/s pump wurring ? But no affect on the steering itself

did you try using a hose as a stethascope, hold one end on your ear and move the other end around. A pump can make a noise but you have to find the true source rather than guessing.

I have a piece of pipe now I will go check it out and let you know.. Thanks for replies folks

No it when the clutch is pressed. It fluctuates with the Rev.. I tried listening with the hose and couldn't really pin point it better.. If I do a big journey it will get very bad.. I'll upload a recording later

Perhaps before you end up with major damage or a breakdown you should have a professional mechanic look at it.
