I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM that always seems to go to the next notch above the temp of 200. I have coolant in the gauge and it doesnt have any leaks. Also, it does not run hot in the red zone, but creeps up when im idling and when im constantly doing stop and go traffic. It stays at the right temp of 200 when im doing highway driving. Every mechanic I ask about it keep telling me that its fine as long as it doesnt go in the red zone. But the car always stayed at the right temp since I had it, it just started creeping up lately. I have a gut feeling that its something wrong.

If your car is equipped with air conditioning, turn off the a/c when it starts to overheat and see if the temperature drops or stabilizes. This may be a sign of a bad a/c fan or a/c fan relay. Another way to check the a/c fan is to open the hood with the a/c on and check to see if all of the fans are running.

The radiator fan can be checked in much the same way. With the car hot, the fan should be spinning a full speed. If not have it checked.

If you feel something is wrong with your cooling system, have it check out and repaired right away. Neglecting this system may end up being costly.

it is very common symptom for grand am v6 engine. i would say its ok as long as coolant level is good, and cooling fan work working properly.
i will recommand you to change thermostat with 180 degree rating. (OEM is 195 degree)

by the way, if your car is v6 engine, make sure no internal coolant leaks such as bad lower intake manifold gaskets and engine head gasket. both kind of gaskets are not last very long.
