Why is my 2005 Pontiac Sunfire temperature gauge flipped over?

The Temperature needle on the gauge cluster has been slowly creeping up over the past few days (even though the car is off, and the engine is cool, it doesn't drop down like the other ones do, even if the car has been off overnight). As soon as i start the car, the needle goes to the previous point and would raise from there until it eventually flipped over. I have coolant in the car and I know it's not overheating. The gauge just kept going up and now it rests on the Tachometer (???) So I have no clue. :) Has anyone else had this problem?

happened to me too....you gotta get your tachy fixed...i dont know how i just took mine to the dealership....took them 15 minutes

Just bought a 2005 Sunfire 94K Temp gauge flipped onto tach

I've barely driven this car 1000 miles - hopefully the VW dealership will take care of this as they promised. Car was bought "as is" but I was assured if something like this happened right after I bought the car they would make it right.

My tags just came in- still have the dealer tags on it.

I'm not posting the dealer unless they do not keep their word.

What a bummer.

the stepper motors go bad in these gauge clusters . if you are good with a soldering iron they are not that bad to replace and you can get them on ebay for about $10 .

same thing happened to my 2001 Sunfire, except the tach went haywire, and the temp gauge did the same thing as you described.. ended up replacing my cluster.

Even though the thread is a few years old, it is still a great idea to keep posting to the topic. This benefits new members to the forum looking for answers to issues they are having.

To get back on topic, I have the same issue with my gauge cluster. My tach and fuel gauge creep up or are sticky. This is a common problem with GM vehicles. Either swap the cluster or replace the stepper motors. It may be cheaper to go to a wreckers and get a used cluster, which cost anywhere from $50 to $100. Rebuilt clusters from GM typically go for around $240.

Or you can check Craigslist and see if anyone is parting out a Sunfire or if anyone sells or repairs GM clusters. Here, the closest one is in Snohomish, WA and they repair them for 120.
