modification? I have a Firebird that I would like to modify by installing a Chevy big block, but I'm not sure if an engine of that size will fit into the compartment. If not, are there ways to modify it so that it will fit?

Any Big Block Chevy will bolt right into the stock engine compartment on the stock mounts, the issues you will run into are ...
exhaust, (manifolds don't work and there are not many hedders available)
you need to take some weight off from the engine with the use of an aluminum water pump and intake manifold..
and you may need to remove or modify the air box for the heater ..
also the factory transmission and rearend are weak and will only stand up to minimal abuse before failure .....
but the engine itself will fit right in ..
