wont shift into L1?

Bought a 1999 Grand AM SE on monday with 88k miles on it, noticed today that you cant shift into L1 (not that I need to) it goes from P - R - N - D - 3 - 2 but not to 1. The gear shift just wont move to 1... Is this a problem?

Dont really know what prompted me to try but I did and I cant...

Probably a shift linkage out of adjustment.

The shop said it might be something fell in from the console and got stuck but it was worth opening up because ill never use L1. Is a shift linkage adjustment a huge problem?
