I am currently driving my wifes 2001 Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2 engine. This summer I replaced the plugs, wires, and air filter. I would have replaced the PCV valve, but this model engine does not have one.

Currently I have a check engine light on. I am pretty certian its the canister vent soleniod located by the gas tank that needs replacing. We had it replaced approx. 4 years ago.

Ive decided to not replace it at this moment. However, by choosing not to replace it, am I sacrificing fuel economy?

You really need to go to a parts store and have them pull the codes for you. Most will do it free, and it will give us a better chance of properly answering you question. BTW, if it really is an EVAP system code that you have, it shouldn't really effect you gas mileage.
