Hi, I'm new here(so be gentle :) ). The wife's 2007 G6 convertible, 3.9L GT (about 75,000 miles)sprang a power steering leak last night. This morning, I crawled under it and the best that I can feel is that one of the power steering hoses is laying on the exhaust just below the (pre)cat. The silver heat barrier is all crispy and feels like it has burned through. The hose is wet there, and it feels like it is burned through also. First, I can't believe that hose (even though it has thermal protection. The other hose is directly above it) was meant to be laying directly on a hot exhaust pipe. Second, I only found one TSB that might be related; it's number is 49764, but the description is not complete. Do any of you have access to further information on this TSB? Or, do any of you know anything about this issue? Third, do any of you know if this issue would be covered under the 5 year 100,000 powertrain warranty? It looks like the cradle may need to be dropped, so I'm going to have somebody fix it. But, since this is a design flaw, I'm hoping GM will step up to the plate (I'm not holding my breath). The wife sure freaked out when the fluid hit the exhaust pipe and the smoke came pouring out from under the hood. Luckily, she had only run a short trip and the pipe was not fully heated.

Well, I put the G6 up on my lift and I was wrong about the hose being on top of the exhaust. It is below the exhaust in a manner that the back side exhaust sits on top of the hose. What does it take to change the hose. From the best that I can tell, I need to remove the back exhaust pipe and or driver's side wheel well and pull the power steering pump to access the pressure hose connector. Does that sound correct? Anybody do this repair yet? Also, it looks like you have to buy both hoses as they seem to be Siamesed?

have no direct experience with your issue, good idea to pick up a shop manual for the car.

I would agree with you 100% if the car was not designed/built the with hose up against the exhaust pipe. It looks like GM is going to take care of this. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Let us know how you make out. Unless you had all your work done at a dealership, usually no help.

They towed it to the dealer a couple of hours ago. Here are a couple of pictures. Apparently, it was up against the pre-cat.

We went to pick up the car today and expected some version of "this wasn't our fault, that will be $320.00 please." But, true to their word, the local dealer with the zone rep's backing fixed the hose at no cost to us. We currently have four GM products in our "household" and three are daily drivers. I appreciate GM stepping up to the plate and fixing an issue that should not have gotten out of the factory and also (apparently) past the dealer. It's nice to know they made an effort to keep us as future customers. And, yes the new repair has an additional layer of "thermal barrier" and the hoses are now tie-wrapped away from the catalytic converter.

Help car is on fire and wont steer

want is going on ? GM needs to do a recall and fast before they kill people with this car. I cant believe it but this same issue happen to me on my way to work yesterday. i was pulling into the parking lot at work when under the hood and car filled with smoke. I thought oh shoot my car is on Fire, tried to steer the car in the nearest parking spot so i could stop an jump out. i had to use all my weight to turn the wheel. shut car off got out fast! waiting for smoke to clear. I could see power steering fluid dripping on the exhaust pipe. I did a search on line to see if this was a common issues and sure thing it is. why is GM risking are lives??? i could have been killed. If this had happen on the freeway , no steering and car about to burst into flames. Someone from GM needs to contact me and fast. i called the dealer and they said sorry you have 113k your car is no longer covered under warranty. WARRANTY MY ASK this is a defect and talk about a safety issue. Losing your steering and flammables leaking on to heated exhaust?? Are you really going to brush this under the table ? hum ya i don't think so let try again.I can bet if this happen to carnutt and now myself just a few weeks apart. there must be alot more owners with this issue that haven't posted. GM call me AND PLEASE put out a recall fast peoples lives are at stake with your product
