Ok so while at the junk yard looking for stuff I started getting greedy since the only bird there was from 92 and so I started yanking parts with the thought of "I bet this will fit" So below I have comprised a little list of what I have found was interchangable between the 88 and 92.
The reason I am posting this is because according to the Hollander Interchange (yeah I have it lol) none of the parts should interchange between these years.
So the parts that interchange if both cars are the 2.0
Valve cover (this is tricky the 88 has compression stops but the 92 ommitted them. So to interchange it you must purchase the plastic core gasket for a 92 in which the stops are given to you to put in the gasket holes. All filters and covers fit between the two and all bolts are 10mm)
IAC valve (it is exactly the same you DO NOT need the wiring harness)
TPS (same as IAC)
Entire TBI unit (this works but I just rebuilt mine so I didn't take it. The top portion of the 92 was thinner than my 88 but one coule be put on top of the other. All parts can be switched between)
Air filter housing (all parts are the same except the little sensor next to the tranny fill dip stick I think its an air temp sensor this is different but if you pull the clip from the 92 you could make it work on an 88. Both plugs are the same)
Alternator (appears to be the same 100 amp)
Wiper box (same and pump is the same)
So that is all the parts and some I didn't pull but rather compared to mine and they were all the same.
I did take the valve cover as my compression stops were mushroomed and since the stops were manufactured on the cover they could not be removed. so I did what I said above and it worked great.
So all in all it seems GM changed very little between model years as far as the engine is concerned.
It was sad to see the engine in the junk yard had oil all over it and all the aluminum is permanently discolored from it (yep I'll have to paint the cover since its stained or polish it) Looks like it blew the HG and someone ran it until it died. Had the typical burnt oil smell pontiacs get when no one works on them.
Man GM did a nice job on the body of these cars cause like mine it had hardly any rust and what was there was just surface rust. it read 214,000 on the odo. So apparently these cars make it pretty far even if they are neglected.
