I have a 2001 Pontiac Aztek. When I went to start the car yesterday the battery was dead and needed a jump to start it. When the car was running we noticed that the ac/heater blowing fan was running even though the knob was in the off position. When we turned the car off and the key was removed from the ignition, the blower fan stayed on and continues to blow until the battery is disconnected or Fuse #47 under the hood labeled "main battery fuse for HVAC and ignition 3 relay" is pulled. I replaced the fuse but the issue remains. I assume there is a short somewhere or something else needs to be replaced. If its something somewhat accessible I can handle it myself. Is it possible it's the blower fan motor, blower fan resistor, ac contol unit in car? Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks

I dont have access to 2001 owners manual but here is the 2002, look at page 2-29 and you will see a feature called RAP, retained accessory power. Check after about 15 minutes if you reenter the car without inserting the key if your radio still works in addition to the fan still running. If it does continue to work you have an issue with the BCM, body control module. If you do not have RAP in 2001 or the radio does not continue to work the next guess is a stuck relay or the igntion switch is not fully turning power off.

Thanks for the reply. The 2001 does have RAP, but once the key is out and you open the door the radio goes off and does not come back on until the key is in the ignition. I had read somewhere that the blower motor resistor has a relay In it but I don't want to replace it til I can figure out if that is it. Is there a way to test the relay? I appreciate your help. Thanks

a resistor and a relay are two different things. The resistor provides the lower fan speeds. The relay permits higher current flow to the motor without the current flowing through the blower switch on the dash. Typically there are a number of relays all identical. Figure out through your owners manual which is the blower relay and switch it temporarily with one of the other identical relays.
