Hi All,

New around here and looking for advice. I am replacing the master cylinder on my '62 Catalina. After bench bleeding the new MC I've run into a problem during install where the pushrod from the brake booster has a plunger instead of the typical rod. Have I ordered the wrong MC or is the plunger able to be removed? All of the aftermarket MC's I've been looking at have the same configuration as the one I purchased. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You need to unhook the pushrod from the brake pedal. It looks like the plunger is stuck on the pushrod from the old master cylinder. Fred

I agree, that looks like the piston from the old master, did the old master have a piston in it's bore when you removed it?

Hi and Greetings from Finland!

We were strugling with that same problem yesterday and we also thought that it is the piston from the old master BUT we were wrong.
That plunger right there is connected to the brake booster with a pin located at the back of the brake booster. So in order to get one out is to unhook the pushrod from the brake pedal and remove whole brake booster from the body. After that we opened the brake booster and found that it was filled with dirt and liquids.
Here is few pics:

thanks for the pictures and clarifying that they used that type of set up back in 62.

Hello, new to all this, I'm having the same problem as _benz, The brake boosted on my 62 Grand Prix has the plunger head insted of the rod style and I can't find a master cylinder that will fit. Has anyone solved this problem before? Please help. Thanks

Hello, Hopefully you see this message :) I was wondering how you solved the problem with the master cylinder not fitting your brake booster. I having the same isue with my 62 Grand prix. Thank you

Your master can't be rebuilt?
You don't have a 62 factory service manual?

I don't, I was hoping that maybe a different year would fit. Thanks for the reply.

Did you disassemble the old master to see if the bore is in good enough condition for a rebuild?

Rockauto has 4 different masters

Thank you for helping me :) I ordered a master cylinder and it does't fit, it seems like all the parts stores have the same one. I having the same problem as the pictures. But I think I'm going to try and have the master and the booster rebuild.

What a great era !
Back in the 90's I had these 1st world issues.
I solved them by installing a 2nd gen Camaro booster & MC.
Not sure if you were trying to stay stock or not.
This combo worked in a few cars, ford, chrysler, edsel, that I had to do from 1938-59
Not much fab work if any.
Good luck
