Hello all, so I have a pretty big problem, I decided to try installing a push button start in my 99 sunfire. I kind of winged it when it came to where to put the wires as I haven't done much for electrical mods other than stereos. Needless to say, there is a set of 3 wires just below the ignition where the key goes (Yellow, black and white) I stripped these and was spicing one of the wires for the push start when it connected with one of the other bare wires. Now the car will start once then dies seconds after, I have no dashights either. I can hear a buzzing coming from the drl relay located in the inside fuse panel. The car will start once and die, but if I try to start again without turning the key back to off, it just cranks without starting.

Learned my lesson to leave electrical mods to professionals, but need to have my car running for work monday! Any help at all will be greatful, going to pick up a new relay for the drl and fuel pump tomorrow, but not sure either will help.

I am quite stressed over this as I don't want to spend more on the car than its worth

Please help!

The lesson you should have learned, even when doing stereos, is you always disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Have you checked all the fuses in both the engine compartment box and the passenger compartment box?

Defiently learned that lesson too, planned on getting everything apart yhen disconnecting but then forgot. Checked all fuses inside and out, my inst lps fuse is not blown but won't light up on my wire tester, which explains my dash lights being out, other than that they are all fine. Also hear a ticking noise and almost a spool down noise coming from by the top of my intake, possibly the injectors?

If possible check under the main fuse box in the engine compartment for melted wiring, do you have a wiring schematic so you would know what the function is of the wire that was accidentally grounded?

Will check for melted wires now, and sadly I do not.

Did not see any melted wires. When the key is in the on posistion the check engine light, air bag light and park brake light are all that comes on and the fuel needle dances around a bit. After cranking the engine starts then dies and the check engine light disappears, when turning the key to off, there is a sound that winds down just behind the top of the intake on top of the motor. Also, with the key on, there is a click noise coming from the same spot sometimes, but not every time.

Thanks for the replies!

Those 3 wires are for the passlock system, try reconnecting them back to their original locations and try and start with the keys. I've got a remote start on mine and rather than buy a bypass for the passlock, if you cut the wire (yellow I think, would have to check) while the engine is running the car shuts off the passlock because it believes there is a problem. BUT if your battery dies or is disconnected then it will reset and you'll be stranded. I put a switch between the wire I cut, if you did the same then you could always toggle the switch and use your keys.

Since I could not get the push button to work I put everything back to normal,I have tried cutting the yellow wire while the engine is running, read it somewhere yesterday but no luck, acted the same as before, will try a toggle.
