Hey everyone , just picked up a 72 lemans in pretty good shape and am excited to build it up. i ordered a Holley 4160 4 barrel carb off amazon and was wondering if its the right carb and if i needed anything else to make it fit? adapter plate or whatnot. its a pontiac 350 motor with stock intake . thanks !

I believe if your car was stock it would have a 2 Barrel carburetor on it right now.

which means you will need a intake manifold. this is just a example summit has many choices, some are much cheaper.

you will need a throttle bracket and kick down cable adapter if the car is a automatic

If you have a manual transmission this adapter is more expensive but looks better.

So before we get too carried away ordering parts and spending your money, lets find out more about your car.

We need the casting number off the engine and heads, we need to know what carburetor is on the car now.

Are you running points or HEI ignition?

Hei ignition , yes has two barrel on it now. I'll go see if I can find casting numbers and its a automatic

Rochester 2 jet on the car now where can I find the casting numbers ?

going by the heads it looks like the original 1972 350

This is telling me that you may want to consider sourcing a better engine to start with. and save this engine for when and if you ever sell it.

Why are these engines under powered or something ? I'm not racing it or anything just cruising around town with my wife . Just thought it would give it a little more power

your car is only worth so much, buying performance parts for a very old stock engine that may be a numbers matching engine will put that engine in harms way.

Removing this engine and storing it properly will preserve the number matching engine for the day you want to sell it.

Yes the original engine is way under powered from the factory, and will have lost some of the power it had over the years.

its my opinion that you should baby what you have and save your money and effort for a better foundation.

this is an example of what might be hiding a diamond in the rough with many of the parts you may want to increase power, all while maintaining the cars value and not risking the original engine and transmission.

this would be a great donor car if the research panned out. and you could sell off the parts you didn't use and end up with many of the parts you would have to buy otherwise at a retail level.

Of course you would have to find something like this closer to where you live.
and you may find a better option than this.

As EaOutlaw already stated you need a new intake manifold also because the Holley wont fit your current intake. You will also need a new air cleaner assembly because the two barrel assembly wont fit the Holley. You also dont state which Holley 4160 they make many different sizes.

Holley 0-80457S Model 4160 Street Performance 600 CFM Square Flange 4-Barrel Vacuum Secondary Electric Choke ..

there is a pontiac 400 fully dressed for a thousand bucks on craigslist not far from where i live. would that bolt on to my tranny and motor mounts or would i have to get radical.

It will mount up.

Get a list from the seller of what he claims he has in and on the motor, also get the head casting numbers and block casting numbers.

If possible listen to the engine run. and preferably pull a compression test on it before you buy it. and test the oil pressure.

post a link to the CL add so we can see what he is offering.

Looks like a interesting find, one worth getting the numbers off of.

Dang, Sold! looks like I'm stuck with this 350 for now. will the thing even do a burnout with only like 150hp, if that. ill keep looking but for now what hypethetically could i do to this motor to see some more HP.

The best thing you can do is save your money for the right deal when it comes around.

The 350 in your car is a transitional engine, just a few years before your car was produced the 350 put out pretty decent numbers.

You have a low compression set up with small valves. to increase horse power significantly you will want larger valves better flowing heads and higher compression pistons, new intake, new exhaust, etc etc.

all of this work means cash and lots of it.

You will be reinventing the wheel by trying to get power out of your old engine.

If I were you I would clean up what you have and sell it, add cash to what you get for this car and buy a car with the performance you want.

Some of the questions you have asked makes me believe that your not too comfortable under the hood and perhaps lack experience working on cars.

This is fine not everyone has to be a muscle car guru, I know I am not.

So do what you do best, make as much money as you can doing whatever that is. and buy the car you see in your head.

messing around with your car adding performance parts will just drain your wallet and make your car less desirable when it comes time to sell it.
