People,

1987 sunbird GT non turbo, code 45. I buy a new O2 sensor, install it, and car runs rough again just driving it only out of the driveway. Again, car shows code 45. This is a "running rich" O2 sensor high voltage indication according to the GM code manual. . Not sure if it necessarily means the sensor is bad, but how does one try to remedy this? What should I do with code 45?

Note- my car does burn oil a bit. It has 233,000 miles.

Thanks.

Have you tried a spacer for the sensor?

Code 45: Bad O2 sensor or leaking Injector, did you buy a AC O2 sensor? GM Cars like only AC or GM O2 sensors, others give false readings... Try some injection cleaner in the tank also...

No, not an AC sensor. In the past so many years never paid attention, and any O2 sensor worked. But with your advice, I should try the ac sensor. easy, cheap. But isnt there already added solvent cleaners is gas? Lots of articles on that. "Detergent gasoline".

Thanks, Doug and Mel,

An example of a spacer incase your sensor is being effected by oil

Bosch no good in GM Cars and Trucks, AC or NTK only ( O'Reilly's has both).... only 1 year warranty on any... anyways...still have the factory original on mine and it burns oil 157k miles....do use injector every once in a while too....👍

Wow, so good to know. I never knew about these sensors. I will also check my plugs as they have been gunked up in the recent past. That cant be good for the sensor, I figure. Thanks, Mel and Doug.

Crazy idea- can I run the car without an O2 sensor?? Kinda like running the car without a cat?

Car runs great! New O2 sensor from Orielly, NKG. Fuel injector spray pattern looked good- cone shaped, even fine spray into the TBI. Will never but another Bosch O2 sensor.

Why did my post show not my name but G-336428?????????

Update- seems like solve 1 problem only to encounter another- after a few days of car running OK now after starting, car runs like He++ kicks/sputters/bucks like mad for only the 1st 1/4 mile, then all goes away. Upon aggressive acceleration car takes off like a Ferrari. No check engine light. I thought this was one symptom of a bad TPS but after checking Voltage on the TPS I got 0.6 v closed, and 4.5V throttle wide open. And when I manually increased the throttle position the V crept up nicely, no jerky V changes. This indicates a good TPS (?),

Mel,

Know where I can find an Os sensor spacer you mentioned above? I need to try that as my O2 sensor JUST quit. I just got a check engine light again, after putting in the new sensor last week. Sheeesh. Is my car's exhaust fouling up the sensors that fast? Will a sensor work well with a spacer? Thanks.

You need to know diameter and thread type to find correct one.

Coolant temperature sensor or Mapp sensor could be bad.....If it happens when cold then temp sensor, mapp all the time....

Can't believe the O2 is bad already..
