So now that I've gotten my 1997 Grand Am GT 3.1L running, the most noticeable issue is below.

Instrument Cluster Symptoms –
  • Tachometer at 0 rpm
  • Speedometer pegged at 100% (120+ mph)
  • Temperature at 50%
  • Fuel at 50%
  • Brake light comes and goes regularly
  • Seatbelt light comes and goes intermittently
  • Odometer is advancing
I’m hoping it isn't but I'm thinking the cluster microprocessor may have gotten damaged somehow since the scanner looks as if it is receiving speed, temperature, and rpm (I didn’t check fuel or much else).

I am using Torque with an OBDLink MX+ OBDII dongle to get data and noticed that the alternator is putting out 11.8VDC at idle, but goes to 13.5VDC when I give it some gas, then comes back down. Because of this, I will be getting a new alternator soon. Heh, maybe whole the problem is the alternator

There are multiple other issues that need taking care of, such as a cooling issue, but this is more of a safety thing as this is going to be our alternate car for getting around when the others are in the shop.

EDIT - I should add that the ODO is advancing as it should when I drive.

Start with the alternator and see what happens.
The other issues some could be cluster others not, brake light and seatbelt.

Could be bad cluster connection/ plug. Check your battery ground, engine grounds and interior grounds connections also... make sure they are clean and shiny..

Based on the wiring diagrams, it would seem to indicate the cluster microprocessor may have gotten damaged, possibly with stray voltage.

I'll be installing the new alternator after work tomorrow. I will keep you fine folks informed of my progress and any solutions that I come upon. Right now, I am in the "staging phase", I'm locating scrapyard sources for a new cluster if it comes down to it.
