I'm new here and posted an intro on the new members page. Just bought a 94 SE coupe with 140k on it. Needs a bit of tlc but brakes and fluids look good,no rust. It's a 4 cyl auto . I bought it for a stay at home car for my wife for $300.

Other than needing 4 tires and a PMI is there anything I should look for to make this a nice car for the wife. It has had recent brakes, new alt.,and tune-up. I plan on changing the thermostat and hoses that look old or feel soft...Other than that??

Regards

serpentine belt

Also give a look at all the vacuum hoses to make sure they aren't going soft or dry rotting.

Vacuum hoses are already on the "to be replaced list"and the belts look new.

Thanks

While we're on the subjects of what to lookat or to do...I use Mobile 1 in my truck,96 with 270k. will the little 4 cyl. like Mobile1 and with 140k on the clock and reg.services unknown, would it be advisible to stick with the factory recomended wt. or go heavier?

I would try something like the High Mileage Castrol oils. If you burn oil or hear any noise try one weight up.

dude if u bought a car for 300$ there is somthing else wrong the seller did not tell u

To begin with...I'm NOT a DUDE!... I bought the car cheap and full well expect there to be a few problems with a car that has 140k on it and is 18 yrs. old...Having said that, The compression id good, oil is clean,as is the trans fluid. I will need to replace all 4 tires and replace a missing turn signal lamp on the front. Other than that the car runs very well.I'm 62 and have been around cars and machinery all my life. I am not at all familiar with Pontiac's and the small FWD 4 cyl. cars. I expected a bit more respect and intellegence from board members...Oh Well...I'm outa here. I'll get the info I am looking for elsewhere.

I will need to replace the drivers door window regulator. Are pick and pay yards a good bet or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Front brakes are new but the rears will need replacing in the near future.

Regards

Are you wanting to replace the whole regulator assembly, or just the lift motor? A lift motor alone can be had for about $35-$40 new. The whole regulator runs about $85-$200 at Auto zone. I guess in the end, it would come down to how much a pull and pay wants for the part and how much you think your time is worth to have to pull the part and do the repair. I would say if they want more than $30 for the whole regulator assembly , go for a new one. YMMV though.

I have the patience of an oyster so it now becomes just time and money...if it's a 3rd. thing It's usually more money...

Looked at the "Rock Auto" site and only found the Pass side regulator for cheap...the drivers side is expensive...I'm still looking for the left side for cheap.

Regards

Well I finally got the car home...Makes a grinding noise from the drivers side front. It's not brakes and the CV boot is in good condition. I have never owned a FWD car but I suspect it's the hub bearing going bad...Any ideas or am I right in the diagnosis...

Regards

Does the noise vary if you make a turn? You can jack up the wheel and grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock position, and try to see if it has any play. Also do the same at the 3, and 9 o'clock if you have play, it's going bad.

The noise does'nt vary when I drive and make turns. No clunk or click on hard right or left turns. I will jack the car up later this am and see what it does at 12,6,3,& 9.

Thanks
