Hello, I will try to be thorough but its a weird no start.
I have a 2006 Grand Prix base, rust free car.
I recently rebuilt the car, not wrecked, but it was all stock & bad.
I rebuilt the motor, replaced the fuel system from pump to injectors, the whole 9 yards down to the tires.
Everything was replaced.
I drove the car around, gave it a bath, drove it some more.
Got home, shut it off, fired it back up, no problem.
Waited 30 mins, fired right back up.
Came out the next morning and I heard a Clunk.
Dang, motor locked up.
Nope, spins fine.
After days of messing with it, here is where I stand.... Aaaaaaagghhh
Lol
All Neg & Pos posts, cables, nuts, bolts, mounting points have been sanded clean.
No fuses are blown.
Swapped relays around.
Pulled starter, it was gummed up.
Disassembled starter, cleaned & bench tested. Works fine.
But Not in the car.
Tried starter #2.
Bench tested fine, Clunked in the car also.
Ran wires from starter #1 mounted in the car to starter #2 outside the car, both acted the same & clunked at the same time.
Barely kicks out, no spin and slams back in.

Tested Batt+ to engine ground ~ 12.59v
Batt+ to Batt- was 12.60v
Starter+ to engine -- it was 12.59v
Tested purple Sol+ wire in crank position and test light lit up.

Heres the weird part.
Through all of this, my gauges do not swing.
Fuel gauge works, all lights work.
With the starter in the car wired up, turn the key, CLUNK, Total Power Loss for a split second, everything resets.
Remove the starter, turn the key to crank, No power loss, gauges swing, things are back to normal.

I replaced the solenoid, that did not work.

Im thinking PCM/ECM but after dropping 2500 on this car.....but then again, its like the last part left to replace.
Oh yeah, I bought a new ignition switch too.

So basically, the car works properly until you install the starter.
Gauges & info center flutter, reset, total power loss with the starter in, in crank position.
Everything is new.
No blown fuses or relays.
Power where power should be, at the proper volts.
Clean grounds.
Starters work.
Help.
TIA~✌

Have you tried removing the spark plugs and turning the engine over by hand? I know you say it spins fine is that because you already turned it by hand?
Have you carefully looked at the ring gear?

Turn motor over with a 24 mm & 3/8 ratchet.
Have not taken anything apart except for the starter.
Car is about to go to a scrap yard.

Missed the part how you had both starters in series. Either they both have brush or armature issues or regardless of your voltage readings your battery cables can't handle significant amperage draw.

Im going to pull the crank pully and check the CKP.
If thats not it, Ill buy the PCM/ECM, if thats not it, car gets parted out then scrapped.

None of those items explain the starter behavior.
Look for corrosion under the battery cable insulation near the ends.

Not sure on gauges but you obviously arent getting enough amperage to the starters regardless of your voltage readings.

Yeah.....but why ?
Assuming that the purple wire comes from the fuse panel on the fender, I could splice into it and run a new wire.
But the good ole haynes manual doesn't really give any info on the car.

Heres the puzzler, starter out of the car, guages work, no power loss when in crank position.
Starter in the car, guages do not work, power loss when key in crank for a split second, everything resets like the battery was disconnected.

Cannt help you anymore, sounds like bad cable not capable of dealing with large amperage draw from starter.

Thats ok.
Im going to pull the crank pulley.
If the sensor is good, I will pay Just Answers for the answer.
Thanks anyways.

Car will be for sale the moment it starts if ya know anyone looking for a rust free grand prix with no body damage. Lol

Thanks a ton !
I guess the Pos wires at the battery were toasted, but didn't look like it.
Put clean wires to it and it started up.
Starter dragged on a bit, but after getting it running, everything smoothed out, cel went out.
Being frustrated I overlooked amp draw.
Thanks !
I cleaned the terminals but not the actual wires and contact area.
Thats where my fault lies.
