Is there a easy way to replace an oil pump on an 86 2.8 V6? I've researched some and see that the motor has to be detached and raised, starter, and possibly the AC compressor have to be moved. Anyone else found an easier way?
Also, does a $20 oil pump rebuild kit make sense or should I just pay the $40 bucks on a new complete pump? And can the old pickup tube and screen be used or should I spend $8 bucks for a new one as well?

There is no other way to change the oil pump that is easier than the typical way.
It is better to buy the whole pump. Actually GM makes a high volume oil pump which was used in the later 3.1/3.4L engines. (3.1/3.4L engines are basically a 2.8L engine with a different crankshaft and pistons, nearly all parts interchange between the engines)
This would be a lot better to use.

GM part number: 10051104

Melling also makes a high volume pump as well.
Melling High Volume Oil Pump numbers:
Oil Pump - High Volume M95HV
Oil Pump Screen - 95S3

Changed the oil and added Lucas Oil Treatment. The car still may need a Oil pump. There is still some sight clattering and I'm hearing a knock, but it may be spark knock or may be a bad plug wire, rotor, etc. I have yet to put a mechanical oil pressure gauge to check if my dash gauge is just reading bad.

I just pulled the oil pan off my 86 2.8L SE without touching the AC compressor. To do so, disconnect your battery, then remove the right rear wheel and fender well spash gaurd (partially). Then remove the two nuts from the lower right motor mount. Next remove the lower engine motor mount bracket bolt. Loosen the upper bolt that goes through the alternator bracket and motor mount bracket (do not remove the bolt). Disconnect the upper dog bone motor mount from the motor an swing it up out of the way. Next remove the starter bolts and lower the starter (no need to disconnect the wires). Remove the two bolts with springs that fasten the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Remove the forward springs that hold the ehaust and loosen the right exhaust clamp at the tail pipe. this needs to be done so the exhaust can be pushed to the side when removing the oil pan. Next jck the motor up with a wood block under the harmonic balancer. a you jack up the right side, rotate the motor mount about the bolt that was left in the at the alternator. Remove all your oil pan bolts and then drop the pan (don't forget to drain your oil, of course). Hope this helps.

Thanks, I will try this method. Looks like my SE is definately going to need an oil pump.
