Hey I've got a 99 pontiac sunfire 2.2 and it's over heating, but only when it idles does anybody have any ideas on why this is happening, oh ya the engine light is on to. Any help would be greatly appriciated

well I would take it in to have it looked at because my 95 Sunfire did the same thing and now I have a cracked head gasket and it is getting fixed right now.

How hot does it get? Mine gets up to 230 240 and the dealership says thats normal for my 2.4L

figured out the problem, last time i had freezing rain/snow the fan froze. Now i have to figure out if its the fan motor of the teeth connecting the fan to the motor. Any tips on taking the fan out without to much trouble. Thanks guys/gals for the advice.

overheating

We just bought a 98 pontiac sunfire and we're having the same problem! My husband thinks it's the air lock. he's been trying to fix it since yesterday. The temperature goes down but then at the blink of an eye, it goes back up again.

over heating help

Hi,
There is a little air bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing, it is brass, if you open it up a little you will here the air come out, when you get coolant, close it back up, no more air lock.
The temp. going up and down could be caused by the thermostat operating normally. If this is occuring only at an idle is your radiator cooling fan running?
you also could have a partially plugged radiator, and or, eng. block caused by age or someone putting block sealer in the eng. trying to stop a head gasket leak. "Doesnt work"
Look for signs of a coolant leak which leaves a white crusty trail down the block from where the head and block seam is, they also like to crack behind the front head bolts and leak coolant around the spark plug.
Regardles of anything else the last thing you want to do is over heat this eng. as it has a aluminum head and will warp or at worse, crack!
I hope this helps and good luck,

Ok we put in a new head gasket and the car still overheats whether it's idling or not! We already did the air bleed screw thingy and it only took a few seconds till we got antifreeze and it still overheats. We just put it a new thermostat, (it could be a faulty one) so tomorrow we're taking out the thermostat to see if it still overheats. We're assuming if it does that it's either the water pump or (like you said) a blockage in the radiator. It overheated on me today but the radiator is cold and the overflow is steaming, not bubbling over but steaming! What do you think? Can use whatever advice you can give us as my husband is at a loss now.
