Background on the 2004 Pontiac Sunfire (120k miles): I bought it 4 months ago, it has had issues with long crank times and can often take a couple cranks to get it started since I bought it. There are times where it starts and then dies as if fuel isn't getting to the engine but it does always start right after. The car starts perfectly if I were to shut it off and crank it again...the moment you let it sit for a bit it goes back to those longer cranks. Priming it a few times tends to make it start better, and each time I can hear the buzz associated with the fuel pump. Fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter were replaced.

Anyway, just the other night out of nowhere the engine started shaking pretty bad and the check engine light was flashing. The code we got was p0300. I barely made it home as it would die at low speeds, and it struggled to respond to my foot on the pedal and accelerate. As I was going faster it seemed to fair better.

It has always ran fine when it's started, but there has been 2 incidents where the car stalled on me. It does appear to have some hesitation when pushing on the gas pedal sometimes but nothing terrible. I remember this felt so much better when I replaced the spark plugs a couple of months ago but it has since been a little off. We took out the newer spark plugs and they seemed fine, though a couple had some oil on the ends.

We didn't see any obvious serious leaks anywhere nor was there oil or gas is dripping under the car. Looking into the spark plug holes all I could really see was some oil around the threads while the others looked clean. We replaced the spark plugs again but there is still a misfire but it isn't as bad as before....lots of smell of fuel when I run it.

The amount of things that seem to mimic these symptoms seem quite large. I am uncertain if these 2 issues (the way it cranks) and the random misfires are related to the same issue which is just now manifesting as something much worse. I'll continue to troubleshoot myself but I appreciate any help on finding the most probable causes. Thank you

Do a fuel pressure test including watching how long pressure holds after shutting off the engine to check for leaking injectors.

Yes I am going to try and do that and a compression test. The car is putting off a lot of smell of fuel when ran. It appears there is quite a lot of gas in the oil.

EDIT: When I replaced the fuel pressure regulator a few months back the car started so perfectly numerous times which is odd for it to do on cold starts. That same day, within hours, it went back to starting like crap.

I am skeptical the brand I bought called "replacement" is actually any good. I just don't know if a FPR can go bunk that quick. No gas is in the vacuum line. Ordered a fuel pressure test gauges to see in a few days.

Fuel pressure test -
Won't hold pressure when primed - Spikes up and back down
Normal pressure when engine is started
No PSI jump when the vacuum line is removed from the fuel pressure regulator

So we replaced the FPR and the PSI is higher while running, but it again isn't holding pressure....nor was there any vacuum suckage from the vacuum line. The pressure also drops very quick when the car is off...as it did with the previous FPR.

Compression test
We did this cold. The numbers below are the results from 3 compression tests from all 4 cylinders.
  1. 162 - 181 - 180
  2. 175 - 180 - 180
  3. 169 - 170 - 175
  4. 100 - 130 - 150

The code isn't p0300 anymore but rather p0304....as we can see the pressure was a bit low on cylinder 4 but spiked up as the engine got warm. Still smells of fuel when running. So I am no car wiz so I can't assess if this fuel issue can be related to the compression issue. This compression gauge is a rental from oreillys and I have no idea how accurate it is.

You have to trace what is blocking the vacuum line and it sounds like you have either an external fuel leak or leaky injectors.

What about these lower compression levels on cylinder 4? can that have anything to do with these things?

Also when we took off the vacuum hose on the previous FPR I could feel some suction on the vacuum hose, but still the PSI did not move at all when unplugged.

Now with this new FPR there is literally no vacuum suckage at all and once again the PSI does not change when unplugged. I really don't get it. The fuel PSI is reading higher in general with this new one but I don't get how the suction just disappears just like that. This was all within 30 minutes of each other so I don't see how it could have been blocked.

Thank you

The rule is no more than 10% variation of highest cylinder reading so 4 is weak. You have to trace why the line has no vacuum, cannt tell from here.
Again, you either have an external line leak, you smell gas, or injector issue.

Since the misfire was coming from cyl 4 we swapped that injector with injector 1. The car was now spewing white smoke from the pipe and dripping fuel. Fairly certain this white smoke and gas dripping was not happening before swap.

When we took out injector 4 there was fuel was dripping right out of it while the others were not doing that

Didn't keep the car on long enough to pop a code but the misfire did feel like it was coming from the far right, aka cylinder 1....but it's really hard to tell. Only thing left to do is try out a new injector.

For those curious or any who may come across this thread with the same issue

it ended up being one fuel injector but if I had the money I'd replace them all or clean them.

So we installed the new one and ran it for 5-10 minutes and there was no engine shake, no check engine light. Huge amounts of white smoke blowing out of the exhaust for a bit as it burned off the excess fuel in the car but it went away.

So far so good but I'll know for sure as I drive it around later and get to higher speeds. Thanks to anyone who assisted me

Glad to hear you fixed it.
