Please help!
1) There are two things on my old intake I need to know about for my new one. There is this one thing which would be located on the rear passenger side that is cylindrical with single outlet on one side that is maybe 1/8-1/4 Outside width. other side has an L shape outlet with one going straight and one that is a 90 degree. Same width. I seen a fitting on the intake runner with the same width (Maybe these two connect? no hoses was on when bought with motor) There is also another fitting on the intake on the top near carb mounting (For vacuum? this is twice the size about). My new intake only has this thick fitting and not the small one. There is also no spot for this item to be put onto new intake.

2) Just beneath the water neck for radiator on intake looks to be a thermostat. Is it a thermostat? also right beside this is a weird looking thing that is black and unsure of what it is. The top part is plastic and the wrench size to put it on/off is 1 1/4 wrench( yes 1 inch and 1/4) What is this thing?

This is a 1972 intake so there is NO EGR.

P.S. I have two intakes, one is the original 1972 pontiac intake (400 ci). Second intake is an Edelbrock dual plane intake. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-7156/overview/make/pontiac

ANY HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. I WILL HAVE A PICTURE JUST TO SHOW WHERE THINGS ARE LOCATED. PIC IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE BLURRY SO ONLY REFFERENCE TO LOCATION. RIGHT WHERE THE RUBBER HOSE IS THE THERMOSTAT THING AND BELOW THAT IS FOR THE OTHER THING. IN THE BOTTOM LEFT HAND IS THE WEIRD THING WITH LITTLE NUBS FOR HOSES.

1. I believe you are taking about the vacuum control valve located on the right side rear, you dont need it. The L shaped pipe in the front is for the PCV valve. The other fitting in the front can be used either to connect to your automatic tranmission or your distributor vacuum advance or cap it off.
2. The thermostat fits in the large hole in the front. The other piece is a temperature controlled vacuum fitting, not needed.

3. Make sure you have hood clearance for the Edelbrock

I`ve noticed on the new one that there are two holes for the temp control fitting. It had came with 1 plug for it. Can I cap both and just have the thermo open? Thank you VERY much!

What do you mean "have the thermo open"? By the way you need one of the holes in the coolant cross over on the front of the manifold for the sensor to operate your temperature light on the dash.

I meant by just having the thermostat installed with water neck installed and all connected and have the two holes plugged. So I`m kind of confused here. What exactly does the thermostat do in the intake, there are no wires or anything coming from it, it is just there. Do you know where to buy the sensor located near the thermostat?

I couldn`t have figured this stuff by my own, but there is one more question. What goes on the end of the sender unit? there was nothing on our intake when we go both of them. Like on our 80 TA, would the wires almost hook up directly because we just need the basic alternator, starter, and these items for the gauges.

Didnt this car have a running engine when you bought it? Wasnt there a temperature sender on the intake with a wire connected to it?

The 80 T/A runs but it has the weird 301 T intake, I`ll check out tomorrow and will see. The 400 was said to be running a week before we bought motor in car, Probably just sale speech. Not sure if it was connected or not.

If it helps at all my 71 has the temperature sender on the drivers side of the intake and there is a wire harness running along the intake on drivers side which has the connector.

There was a couple of things that I had found out on the 301T motor. It has something near the thermostat housing and it does not have anything on it. Just has 2 little stubs made of plastic, like the size off that vacuum control valve I think it was that wasn`t needed. The one on motor has two outlets. There is also that temperature sender which has a little metal tit on the top of it which this type of clamp goes onto it. (That would be the temp sending unit because it is just about exactly the same. I will get a couple of pics and put them on my profile in about 20 mins and show you them.)

I have uploaded pictures. Three first pictures are of 301T intake. one with blue end is the one without anything connected, next two are the Temp sender (?). The rest are the old intake for 400. The thing had broke off which was plastic.

the temperature sender is the component with the single electrical terminal

I mean, I`ve noticed that there had been a hose attached to the end of that broken black thing. This may be some kind of overflow or something for to much heat? Don`t even know if there is an overflow for the coolant in the car. Should be. There wasn`t anything connected to these those, both on the 301T and 400 intake.

The black devise controls vacuum based upon temperature, you dont need it. Any overflow would be connected to the radiator.
