so i bought this 96 sunfire the other day that needed some work. brake pedal went all the way to the floor and barely stops. master cylinder reservoir was like empty. i filled it up and pumped brakes for about ten minutes and pulled car forward and saw no spots, and pedal still had no resistance and fluid was full? i thought maybe it was the master cylinder....but that would not explain why i lost fluid in the first place. took it in to the shop i work at (10 miles away) and checked fluid again nearly empty...filled resovoir up and pumped it again, pedal was still spongy but i lifted car on hoist and saw that fluid was rainind out of right rear drum. cylinder was blown out so i replaced that and went to go bleed system.... good steady stream in from two brakes. left rear looks like no air bubbles but kind of a weak stream. and right rear (one i just replaced cylinder on) nothing at all after pumping for like 20 min. pedal still spongy. i put a hose on the bleeder valve and put hose in a bottle of fluid and began to pump. no fluid or air going into bottle.... kinda stumped on what it may be?? any advice??

I would inspect the hoses on the rear brakes for leaks. Also follow the line back up to the front, you might have a brake line that has corroded to the point of leaking.

i followed the line all the way back... its actually in excellent shape...looks like the previous owner had all of the brakelines done

Check the right rear rubber hose for an internal collapse

has ABS right? If it dose and the master has drained, youll need to bleed the master before anythings going to happen out back. Should be two bleeders on the abs. car till need to be running to bleed it.

How did you make out?

My 99, same problem. Both proportioning valves tripped. I'm going to remove the pistons to get fluid to the rear, no fluid at ABS bleed screws either.

How do you bleed master cylinder?

they make inexpensive kits consisting of fittings and rubber hoses. Assuming you mean in the car, you disconnect the line at the master, attach the fitting to the port on the master, attach a hose to the fitting and the other end goes back into the master reservoir. Slowly pump the pedal till no more air comes out.

Thanks melsG5

Canadian tire purchase? UAP/NAPA ?
After master bleed, then ABS bleed...if no fluid, should I pull proportioning valve pistons?
