Hi,
I drive a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Gt and one day I missed a shift when driving and I heard a weird grinding sound pretty similar to the one you hear when you try to shift without using the clutch and you feel like there is a wall that prevents you from sliding the gear lever into the desired gear. After this, I could not shift into gear when my engine is running but when my engine is not running I can select all the gears I want. Also, when the engine is running, when i get close to shifting into reverse, there is a grinding noise.

Is the problem with my transmission or my clutch (or both) and how much would it cost to repair it?
thank you

Did you check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder? If full try having someone watch slave cylinder movement when the clutch is depressed. If all is well with hydraulics sounds like a synchro problem in trani.

Sounds like the slave cylinder / throwout bearing assembly has, or is failing. Since the part in question is located inside the bell housing, (section of the trans axle that houses the clutch assembly, and attaches the trans-axle to the engine) there's no way of telling if the part is working properly. (the part can't be seen) There's also the possibility that the master cylinder for the clutch is failing.

I once had a Cavalier 2.4 that would not shift right when the clutch was pushed all the way down, but it shifted fine if the clutch was held about an inch from the floor.

I guess that holding the pedal off of the floor a little is worth a try, but I really suspect that the slave / throwout bearing assembly needs replacement.
