Moving to P.R.

Running better since the STP ( black bottle) was added.

Trans was replacement ( ours never went out, just had slipping/ no reverse and no lockup on the convertor) 131k on it when reverse went out finally,:( 88K on the AZ used trans ( 1994) we brought on the container. Drove it with no reverse from Sept 2012 - till this May when I swapped it out.
( sick of pushing)

Never spun a tire through the Mud or Weeds !:D ( I went slow)

Doug in P.R.

My fan runs with the marker lights. The relay is always hot so all it needs is a trigger. I can carry more workers with the top down and the air shocks pumped up!!! I stay out of the fields with my bird. We Gots Mud! I pump the water.

Yesterday, I got the trans mount in, as you can see from the pics below the original was worn bad, the "stirup" shaped metal piece on top is lower than the new mounts one. It was actualy resting on the metal part on the mount when in the car and the weight was on it. Will get the dogbone mount next week and install that too. Most of the vibration is now gone........:D

Added a yellow led light next to the temp guage to show me that the fan is running ( wired between the fuse and the fan)

Turn signal indicators on the dash cluster never worked , ( plastic circut board on the back is bad ) so I added 2 green leds in the place of the bulbs. Took out the green plastic lens where the arrows are and drilled thru them and attached the 2 screw in leds . Got all 3 from Radio Shack, I'll have to go back and get a blue one for the high beam indicator since the tiny bulb holder crumbled when I was messing with the cluster.

Thats all for now.............................Doug in P.R.:)

Yeah that mount was pretty shot. I will probably be doing the same soon since mine isn't far behind yours. I don't get no vibes but I just have a feeling they are coming. Preventative work is what I call it when I replace something before I need to. lol

I'm getting ready to rebuild my front suspension and I was going to neglect the mounts but they're pretty cheap on ebay. It's gonna be nice! Thanks guys!!!

Well the Ignition switch on the column burned out Wednesday so I'll be putting that in tomorrow morning. The accessory position never worked and it was getting hard to turn the key the last couple of days.

Took the old one apart Thursday, not able to fix it .

Got the replacement from Autozone ( luckly it was the only one in stock on this side of the island :D )

4 different ones for 92 Sunbirds, 2 for auto ( tilt or no tilt wheel) 2 for Stick ( tilt or no tilt)

Mines a LE so no tilt for me.........................;)

Doug in P.R.

Put it in today (ignition switch) but like everything on this car it was a fight to do it. First time I put it in everything worked except the starter which ment loosing up the 2 screws and sliding it forward a bit. ( 10mm back-8mm front / Pain to get to even with the column dropped)

After that it all worked fine. I added some grease on the column to help the rusty key rod slide easier.

Found the problem with the idle, ( car stalled out twice Tuesday sitting at lights) the IAC valve was dirty so I cleaned it with some gasoline and a rag since I didnt have any throttle spray around.Almost lost the oring down by the injectors but was able to fish it out with a piece of wire.:)

Thats all for now............Doug in P.R.

Dang the ignition switch went that sucks. Mines still pretty decent. My car had a low jack on it and I had to pull that out and clean up the wiring but thats the most I had to do to it around in that area.

The IAC valve is a common thing for that. I tore down my throttle body the other day and gave it a good cleaning. The gaskets looked fine so no need to replace them yet. The IAC valve was a little dirty but I cleaned with electrical cleaner since its a bit milder.

Good job most people overlook the IAC valve

Oh yeah I figured out the fan was good and coolant temp sensor is good so it must have been the relay that caused my fan to not work. I ended up hooking a toggle switch up to it. The overall install of the switch looks good and almost looks like it came with the car. So now I got the fan working. I could have just replaced the relay but I like control of the fan so I know it will come on when it needs it and I aint gotta hope it comes on. Now the temp gauge always stays below the quarter mark. But I think I am gonna pick up a new cam cover from the junk yard since some of the compression stops on mine are worn out and they don't appear to come out. There is a 92 GT at the junk yard right now with a 2.0 and it looks to carry the same cover.

It was sad seeing the 92 GT since it just looked like a blown head gasket it was red with white convertible top. But I did get a good washer fluid box off it. mine leaked bad.

Well , more adventures this week with the Bird. Wife took it Tuesday back to Ponce, it stalled out there at the exact same light as last time. But this time the shifter locked and wouldn't start and the shifter wouldnt move. I came to the rescue with the Silverado but she had managed to get it started and get it in the stores's parking lot.

I got in it and it started right up and drove it back to work without problems.

I guess the car doesnt like her:p , told her not to drive it anymore.;)

I was sick yesterday and still am, but found time today that the bolt that held the shifter cable to the selector arm had come loose a little and it had let the neutral saftey switch to only work in neutal position.

I dug through my toolboxes of bolts to find a locking nylon nut to hold it better this time, the original stud had lost the clip on it and i couldnt find a replacement here, so I used a nut and bolt instead.

My IAC is shot, so I have the throttle adjustment cranked up till I get a replacement.

Thats all for now...............Doug in P.R.

just some food for thought but did you check your tps and your egr valve. If they are clogged or dirty it will cause the stalling too.

my egr looked similar to this

s7307904.jpg

with that nice big chunk of carbon stuck in it.

The tps on mine wasn't all that dirty but I cleaned it anyway.

Is yours MFI or TBI?

Anyway just figured I would throw all that out there just for hopes. I know its not overly expensive but 60 bucks for that little thing is a bit on the retarded side to me. lol Also is there any junk yards around you may be able to grab that off of. It may save ya a bit on money.

Anyways good luck man

WOW! That's Ugly! Best deal I can find so far for mine new is $50 delivered.

I would of got the EGR valve out to check it,"EC" ( as you mentioned before) but with MFI , it looks like the injector rail has to come out first just to get to it.:( ( I miss my SBC's)

Not something I want to mess with right now, hasnt stalled out in days, so I need to take it on along trip to the Ponce Home Depot to try to duplicate it. Worse comes to worse , I'll just unplug it.

Found one ( IAC) on EBay for $15.............:D

"TM", about the same here in the parts stores..........$56 at Advance, way more at Autozone:eek:

Wow around here autozone is the cheap place and Advanced is the expensive one. lol Guess its different across borders.

Yeah being MFI I can understand now why you didn't remove it. But I do get very very good results from Techron on some cars I have owned. I used it in this one and when I pulled the TBI there was almost no carbon on the under half of the butterfly. And it cleaned a few more places as well. So when I cleaned it I litterally only had to give it squirt bursts of carb cleaner. I honestly can't say enough good stuff about it.

Glad you found a new one off ebay. I may yank the one from the junk yard along with various other sensors so I have them on hand. I am probably one of the few people who drives around with new rad caps in the glove box along with new ECS and a few other various small parts. Even got a spare air filter in the trunk lol. I am scared as hell to break down without something to fix it with. Oh and about 3 feet of fuel line and hose clamps lol.

You did great work on the tranny and mounts so I am sure you'll get this nailed down.

Oh yeah Trojan that EGR is ugly as shit. Mine was pretty close to that and I had to use a small chisel to get the stuff out. I didn't expect it to be as hard as it was. Might as well of had a rock stuck in it. lol

Thanks EC! Now I gotta see my EGR!!! This thing is pretty Zippy and I don't wanna lose that.

NP. Glad I'm not the only one who sees stuff like this and it gives me an urge just to check it out lol. Keeps me busy.

You don't have enough projects yet! I'm doing my new top and while looking for window seals today I found a new well liner for $79! Was gonna make a new one to skirt the speaker panel I wanna put in but now I don't have to!! Coolness!!!!!

Car is stalling out alot lately, finally figured it out to a vacumn leak of some sort, happens when you brake to come to a stop. ( power brakes )

Unpluged the EGR, no change.

Dont think its the booster, I'll try the propane trick this weekend to locate the source.

Might be PCV related........it was all gunked up and so is the inside of the intake manifold..........................

Doug in P.R.

Its a little soft where it goes into the manifold, otherwise it looks fine on the other end. Further looking this weekend will tell............

Of course ( I checked) , if I need a PCV valve , no one has it in stock.

Doug in P.R.

How did the intake manifold gasket look? Your leak could be coming from the manifold itself if the gasket is shot.

Also have you checked the Fuel Pressure Regulator? The diaphragm could be bad. Do you smell any gas at all from around the hood area?

Also the TPS can cause some weird idle stuff if its bad.

Yeah I wasn't able to find that damn PCV valve either. The parts store says they can't even order me one. Thats kind of horse shit if you ask me.

Hopefully you get this tracked down. Do the ol cigar trick to track it down or the carb and choke cleaner to look for the vacuum leak. Then you can let us know what it is in the event we ever have this problem. lol

Good luck man.
